THE ART OF HUMOUR

Karen Rosaline Panton is one of those exceptional, largely self taught artists who has developed a sense of style and presentation all of her own. Reading her comments in this article and perusing through some of her paintings it is evident that Karen lives her art; each painting has a voice and meaning, each one a soul.

Apart from the odd day class, Karen, who currently hails from Napier, says she has enjoyed several short courses with the likes of Krispin Korschen, Rua Longley, Marianne Muggeridge, Megan Schmidt, among others. “All fabulous artists,” she enthuses, “who have stretched my mind sideways, up and down and inside out, that is when they could catch up with my own train of thoughts.”

SPICE OF LIFE

Monique Rush is an artist who enjoys painting a variety of subjects, ranging from landscapes and beaches, native birds, underwater life, Kiwiana to cars, (vintage, classic and new).

Monique studied art in college at Green Bay High School receiving 98% in painting and spent a year at Unitec Bachelor of Arts, from then on she taught herself. She says she has always considered herself an artist, as drawing and painting came naturally. “I have always worked hard in any job and art was my sideline but it is now becoming my main focus.”

That day came when our youngest son started school and before long I was tutoring adults and children and painting most of the week. EXPLORING NEW DIRECTIONS

Born in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, New Zealand, art has always been a part of Geoff Popham’s life. From when he was a child growing up in the Far North, he was surrounded by what he describes as 'amazing artwork'.

“Spending time at our whanau marae, and being taught by my elders about the carvings, paintings and weaving was my first education in art,” he reveals. “Seeing the intricacies of the skilled work and the meaning and pride associated with them, inspired me to want to do the same.”

CALL OF THE ARTIST

When asked what motivates her, Pauline Gough says simply: “It is the love of it. It’s important for me to love the whole process – if it feels like work, I shouldn’t be doing it.”

Recalling her early years when the call of the artist flowed strongly in her heart, Pauline says she has always loved anything to do with art: “I wanted to do art at school, however my school in Wellsford, didn’t offer this as an option in those days. My mother looked into some individual lessons and the principal of Rodney College said he would try to arrange an art teacher; however this never amounted to anything. “Art as a career was what I desired, teaching is where I ended up,” she says wryly.

Kim Crosland

WINDOWS TO THE SOUL

Trained as a graphic designer, Kim Crosland is a largely self-taught artist who says she picked up a great deal of her artistic knowledge by joining online art groups and watching various You-tube tutorials.

“This approach helped me to ascertain what is going on in the wider art world, what techniques other artists are using and learning how to develop and apply a distinctive style of my own,” Kim reveals. Kim has carried an inherent ability to draw and paint with her from an early age; her father and grandfather were both portrait artists. She took up painting again about seven years ago, after her father had passed away and also because a friend asked her to paint a few musicians portraits, which were hung in a bar. After that she couldn’t stop. She says she feels indebted to both her late father and her friend for encouraging her to get back into art after 15 years of not touching a brush.

Kim Kerr

STORY TELLING

Kim Kerr has enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age and expressed a keen interest in studying further. When her art teacher at high school tried to discourage her saying she couldn’t do Fine Arts Prelim in Form 7, she decided to prove him wrong, and enrolled at Art School.

She spent three years at Otago Polytechnic where she obtained a Distinction in a Fine & Applied Arts Diploma. After completing this diploma, Kim went on to study at Teachers College. She spent several years as Head of Art Departments at various secondary schools, teaching art, design and history of art.
