MEDITATIVE ART

An intense academic by nature, and artist in heart and soul, Katie Mines spent much of her life studying for a series of degrees and teaching at university before engaging her childhood dream of being full-time professional artist in her own right, and on her own terms.

Prior to 2012, Katie spent 10 years travelling through Asia, Africa and America and seven years teaching at a Confucian University in Seoul, South Korea. She returned to Hawkes Bay at the end of 2012, to raise her daughter and try her hand at painting, which remained a life long dream, “I always knew that art would become a big part of my life, I just wasn’t sure in what capacity until I started painting full time,” she reflects. After years of travelling, Katie was ready for what Hawkes Bay has to offer, “the space to slow life down, have a garden, bring up my daughter, and paint.”

Indigo Wise

PROCEED BEYOND

Well known for her paintings and drawings of New Zealand native birds; including the Native New Zealand Falcon, Fantail, Kea and Tui, Indigo Wise found her passion for art after overcoming long-term health issues and enrolling in an 18 month Visual Arts course at the Golden Bay Work centre.

That was in 2010-2011 and it was not her first study of the arts. Prior to this, in 1988, Indigo completed a diploma of Interior Design, which included life drawing, graphic design, art history and technical drawing at Whitecliffe Art School. As a distance delivery student in Golden Bay, Indigo studied through The Learning Connexion from 2012 – 2014 coming out with a diploma of Art & Creativity and Diploma of Art & Creativity (honours).

OUT OF THE DARKNESS

“It’s the urge to create. The outlet for ideas and creativity and to stand back at the end of a completed painting with satisfaction and to say to yourself, ‘You know, that’s not crap.”

So says Andrew Moon who adds that much of his inspirations grow out of darkness. “In my mind I’ll get the sense of a glimpse of light and colour amid the shadows, then watch to see what develops around that. So most of my work is set against a dark background with a harsh chiaroscuro contrast that scratches my artistic itch.

Beverly Reid

THE JOURNEY

Californian-born Beverly Reid has had a passion for art since childhood. “When I received my first set of Crayola crayons and a colouring book, I loved the exciting hues of colours I could create with them, which led me to drawing different things on my own. My very first memories of drawing were that of a sailing ship, Black Beauty and a ballerina. I was so excited with all the details I could put into my drawings making them ‘come alive’, I wanted to do more! This began my art journey into enjoying realism which still continues today!” .

Apart from a short college course in 3-Dimensional Art in 1994-5, Beverly is a self-taught artist with no formal training, but dedicated to perfecting her craft, and developing her own unique style. “I love being an artist, because I can communicate a feeling or capture a moment in time through my work, and share it with other people. There’s nothing more gratifying to me, when I receive feedback that my art made someone stop, stare at it and keep looking at it!

Hamish Oakley-Browne

HAMISH OAKLEY-BROWNE

Hamish Oakley-Browne is a passionate artist with printmaking as his chosen medium. Having just completed a degree in fine arts at NorthTec in Whangarei, he is currently doing a six-month residency programme at Te Kowhai Print Trust situated at The Quarry Arts Centre.

Hamish says printmaking reflects a “hands-on tactile backlash to the digital world in which people have lost themselves, their intrinsic senses and richness in their lives.

FAITH McMANUS

“There is a revival of printmaking taking place in New Zealand with printmakers being increasingly recognised by the wider art community and the medium is poised to start interacting with other mediums.” These are the thoughts of Faith McManus, locally and internationally recognised as one of New Zealand’s foremost printmakers with exhibitions at dealer and public galleries in New Zealand, Australia and the USA.

Faith, an art tutor at Northtech in Whangarei, says printmaking in New Zealand does not always enjoy the recognition and appreciation it deserves. “There are not many print galleries in New Zealand and there are probably more people collecting New Zealand prints in Australia than they do here.”

Jade Knight

IT'S IN THE EYES

Educated at St Joseph’s primary school in Auckland and Pompallier Catholic College in Whangarei, 19 year-old Jade Knight is currently completing the first year of a three-year bachelor of art and design degree through The Learning Connexion in Wellington.

Jade, who is studying via correspondence, says when she has finished this course, her intention is to follow through with a two-year masters degree in art therapy: “I have a passion for not only art but also working with people so becoming an art therapist will not only allow me to pursue my passion for art but also help people of all ages and walks of life.

A POINT IN TIME

The NZ Artist recently visited the Mangonui Waterfront Festival where we caught up with pointillist and carver Andrew (Andy) Morrison at ‘Exhibit A’ a co-operative gallery of which he is member.

Born in England Andrew (Andy) Morrison was recruited by the New Zealand Government in January 2005 as the Railway Engineering Manager in the central North Island and for the next few years. Art, which had always been a part of his life and something he really wanted to do, played second fiddle to his career. Things have changed.

DREAM CHASER

English-born Kiwi, Janet Marshall has exhibited and sold her work as far afield as England, Japan, USA, Canada, Australia, Italy and China and designed stamps for NZ Post and NZ Fish and Game.

Janet is a founding member of Nature in Art, Gloucestor, England and has work in numerous collections including Nature in Art England, NZ Milk Board USA, NZ Post, NZ Treasury, Puki Ariki Museum Taranaki, and Birds in Art, Wisconsin, USA. She has also written and had published five illustrated children’s books as well as an illustrated garden diary of her former home Te Popo Gardens in Taranaki, called ‘Images of a Garden’.

THE INNER ARTIST

After learning the basics of art at high school Reina Cottier spent much of her life running a series of businesses and raising a family. About seven years ago she took a course dubbed ‘Awaken the Artist Within’, which, she says, “was not so much about learning how to paint, but more about expressing yourself from within and finding inspiration”.

Needless to say the artist within Reina was re-ignited. Not that it was ever that far away. With a theatre wardrobe mistress for a mother Reina had an unconventional upbringing, surrounded by art and craft and everything that went with it.
