Description
Green Lady
She stands 1320mm high overall, with the top of her head being 980mm above ground. Base diameter 305mm. She is carved from a ‘Straining Post’ which would have been fixed at an angle to a corner post on the old Totara fences, and which is why there is a mitred shape at the top of the wood. On the rear of the piece, behind her head, is a deliciously smooth piece, well soaked with lanolin, which must have been where many generations of sheep must have wriggled under for a bit of a back rub. She holds a herb in her hands, so maybe is a ‘wise woman, or healer’.
Her face and hands I have left as raw carved wood, and is not sealed, so that those areas will age to silver grey over time to match the untouched areas of wood.
The coloured areas have been sealed with polyurethane varnish to protect the coloured waxes from fading or oxidizing in the powerful NZ extremes of weather … in a few years they may need another coat of varnish to protect the vibrant colours.
