MEDITATIVE ART

An intense academic by nature, and artist in heart and soul, Katie Mines spent much of her life studying for a series of degrees and teaching at university before engaging her childhood dream of being full-time professional artist in her own right, and on her own terms.

Prior to 2012, Katie spent 10 years travelling through Asia, Africa and America and seven years teaching at a Confucian University in Seoul, South Korea. She returned to Hawkes Bay at the end of 2012, to raise her daughter and try her hand at painting, which remained a life long dream, “I always knew that art would become a big part of my life, I just wasn’t sure in what capacity until I started painting full time,” she reflects. After years of travelling, Katie was ready for what Hawkes Bay has to offer, “the space to slow life down, have a garden, bring up my daughter, and paint.”

DREAM CHASER

English-born Kiwi, Janet Marshall has exhibited and sold her work as far afield as England, Japan, USA, Canada, Australia, Italy and China and designed stamps for NZ Post and NZ Fish and Game.

Janet is a founding member of Nature in Art, Gloucestor, England and has work in numerous collections including Nature in Art England, NZ Milk Board USA, NZ Post, NZ Treasury, Puki Ariki Museum Taranaki, and Birds in Art, Wisconsin, USA. She has also written and had published five illustrated children’s books as well as an illustrated garden diary of her former home Te Popo Gardens in Taranaki, called ‘Images of a Garden’.

DESTINY IN GLASS

A mother of two, a successful artist in her own right, owner of Dicastglass, a successful business purveying tools and materials for all manner of glass casting, Auckland-born Di Tocker has walked the walk to get where she is today. In the story below she describes the highs and lows of life as a professional artist.

I work full time as a Cast Glass Artist and Tutor from my purpose built casting studio next to my home in Ohaupo, Waikato. Though art is part of my practice as far as form and concept, I consider myself to be more of a ‘maker’ than an artist, due to the massive fabrication process involved in the cast glass medium.

THE JOY OF CREATING

“The joy of creating something with my hands and then being able to share it so that others can experience that same joy too.” This is what up and coming artist Alan Lakisoe loves about his life and work.

Born in Napier, Alan has always been interested in art from a young age. “I attended weekend art classes at primary school. I took a deep interest in fine arts, took it through high school and had enrolled to do art at Polytech before deciding to put my passion aside for work to support a family. While I was working, I did sketching in my spare time. I also taught myself a lot through studying art books and online video tutorials of different artists’ techniques.

Fiona Hayward

GOING SOLO

Fiona Hayward was highly rated in two prestigious New Zealand art awards. Her works can be found as far afield as the USA and Australia. She is currently working on a new series of paintings of endangered species from around the world which, she says, will enable her to host her first solo exhibition.

Whilst a deep and profound love of nature lies at the core of her inspiration, it is a peaceful inner feeling of freedom and joy in creating a new artwork that drives and motivates Fiona to paint and draw. Although she has had no formal art training, Auckland born Fiona says her capacity to draw and paint stems from her mother, a talented artist in her own right, who encouraged Fiona from a young age to pursue her artistic bent.

Kim Kerr

STORY TELLING

Kim Kerr has enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age and expressed a keen interest in studying further. When her art teacher at high school tried to discourage her saying she couldn’t do Fine Arts Prelim in Form 7, she decided to prove him wrong, and enrolled at Art School.

She spent three years at Otago Polytechnic where she obtained a Distinction in a Fine & Applied Arts Diploma. After completing this diploma, Kim went on to study at Teachers College. She spent several years as Head of Art Departments at various secondary schools, teaching art, design and history of art.
