By Cindy Kent-Woest

Hollie Almond lets her art become what it wants to be – surfaces saturated with storms of smouldering and dizzying colour. Colour moving and separating, guided by a light touch when needed; becoming beautiful while finding itself. Much like her own journey.

“I became an artist to help myself and to hopefully inspire others to see that art can help them help themselves too. It was my dream job as a child. To turn that into reality, and make my inner child proud for not giving up (even though I lost my way for a while), is probably my biggest motivator.

FINDING THE RYTHM

Sue Lund, an elected artist of the Academy of Art in Wellington, is well-known for her striking work on the walls of the buildings at the Learning Connexion where she studied for an Advanced Diploma in Formless Art between 2003 and 2004, she already had a degree in Fine Arts from NAS in Sydney.

Sue is inspired by life: “Living and the crazy things that send you to places you either never want to go again or where the intrigue is too enormous to resist,” she says adding: “I did quite a bit of travel in my twenties and those times showed me a fairly full spectrum of what life is all about.”

THE LIVING ARTIST

After many years of working in the corporate world, John Hodgson completed a long transition to full time artist with his first solo exhibition at the Depot ArtSpace in Devonport in April this year. Representing seven years of work, a good number of the pieces on show sold over the two weeks of the exhibition which also saw some 600 visitors to the gallery.

Whangarei-born, John, whose very first painting was a self-portrait completed back in 1977, has had a long interest in art but says he ‘played around’ for years while in ‘corporate career mode’ here in New Zealand and in the USA. On returning to NZ in 2003 he says he became really serious about his own art while beginning with partner Mary, a modest collection of work by New Zealand artists.

CARVING A NEW FASHION

“Have a goal, have something to achieve and then go and fulfill it. It always a nice feeling to look back on the journey of how you realised your dreams.”

So says Tanya Short, who some may remember as Tanya Finlayson making and selling handmade jewellery and sewing children’s clothing at the Whangarei markets.
