Stack of Chooks

This piece is carved from an old Totara fence post, and was inspired by the day that, on peering into the nest box of my chook house, was astonished when I realized that I was looking at not just one incumbent, but a pile of 3, each sat on the back of a lower chook. Apparently it was the ‘choice’ spot for laying.

The coloured areas have been sealed with polyurethane varnish to protect the coloured waxes from fading or oxidizing in the powerful NZ extremes of weather … in a few years they may need another coat of varnish to protect the vibrant colours.
