The New Zealand Artist Magazine

A note from the studio

Seasons Greetings to all -

I know it’s only November, but by the time the next magazine is out, it’ll be January and we’ll be saying Happy New Year!

This issue has the results of the Cheeky Challenge on pages 4 - 7 in the magazine and on the Competitions tab above. Congratulations to all who participated, your work is phenominal and your entries much appreciated. Extra congratulations to the award winners.

Professionally Speaking writer John Botton is currently in South Africa visiting family, so we substituted with an article about a new way to exhibit your work, on page 64, with Zinnia O’Brien.

Evan Woodruffe from Gordon Harris, gives us a clear perspective regarding the quality of the materials chosen, and we have a charming demonstration from Caroline Baker on painting.

Claudia Slaney tells us about her experience in New Caledonia, Ira Mitchell-Kirk shares her residency in upstate New York, we explore a whacky treasure in Throwaway Designs and Amanda Brett gives us some pointers on how to simplify plein-air painting.

Kathryn Millard writes her second piece in an ongoing series - ‘Pastel Pieces’ and our regular writer of ‘Sketchbook’, Dougie Chowns introduces us to Sir Stanley Spencer.

Have a look on page 16 at the awesome Winsor and Newton gifts on sale - contact info@jasco.co.nz to find your nearest stockist.

Staedtler has recently introduced an artists range of products, which you can discover in our product pages, amongst other exciting products.

Next issue we have another International Gallery story by Jan Boyes which is set close to Arras - refer Tony McNeight, issue 23. This is the Lens-Louvre Museum in Lens, France.

Please remain safe during the festive season, and keep sharing your lovely artwork on our facebook page. We are having so much fun with that!

With love,
Meg

What our readers and artists think

I’ve been reading the NZ Artist for a while now and I’m subscribing to keep reading it.
Samuel Earp’s piece on colour saturation is Issue 21 Vol 5 was very inspiring. I will induce it in future land- and seascapes. I used iridescent white and drew a conclusion that Flake White is a better one, the colours really pop. I like pencil and charcoal also.

Just wanted to send a big thank you for the two copies of NZ Artists with my advertorial. I am really pleased with the way it looks.
Thank you so much for running the advert and fingers crossed it generates some more interest in the workshops. I love the work by Rachel Walker- stunning! Hope you have a great week.
Kind Regards
Sandra

It has come to my notice that no-one has officially thanked you and the team at the NZ Artist for the sponsorship and generous prizes awarded by the magazine for the 2017 Peters Doig Awards.
On behalf of the Life Members team please accept this belated thank you from all of us. Our somewhat late ‘call up’ to organise the Awards was challenging but all of our team had a wonderful time and really appreciated the help we received from our sponsors.
I use my copy of the magazine during my ‘Time Out’ classes as a means of showing my group that there is a lot of exciting and innovative art happening outside of Marlborough! You are all doing a wonderful job.
My sincere best wishes and thanks,
Jenny

I would be totally LOST without my NZ Artist magazine so will definitely be renewing my subscription.
Your magazine is so unique, so New Zealand and packed full of such interesting and easily digestible information.
Funnily enough it has other benefits that are further reaching to me personally. I have been unable to paint while I am going through cancer treatment and find I happily get lost in your pages to keep my enthusiasm and motivation going for when I come out the other end. Keep up the fantastic work that you all do, I certainly value The NZ Artist.
Cheers
Kathryn Bennie

What an absolutely delightful surprise to come home to find the NZ Artist Magazine with a four-page feature article of my artwork! Thank you so much.
Firstly, I’d like to use the article to promote both my art career and your magazine. Is it OK to photograph and share via my blog, facebook, instagram, my website and various art groups that I belong to? I’ll try not to be OTT about it, but it’s such a good opportunity that I’d love to be able to make the most of it!
I have some good news for you, as I notice that you are looking for youth artists to feature. Well, it just so happens that an established artist in Christchurch, Katrina McGettigan is an art tutor who has a number of really talented young students. I happen to know they’re good because I judged the children’s competition at her gallery in June and was amazed by the emerging talent. I also know that some of her students have had their work featured in NZ publications. I’ve copied Katrina in on this email, so you two can just get in touch with each other if it suits. Once again, thanks so much for the feature.
Kind regards
Ruth Reid

I just want to thank you again for the awesome article and putting my clockwork fantail on the cover of Issue 23!
Please don’t think I had forgotten or was not super appreciative, in fact totally the opposite. I have been super buzzing ever since. Literally every time I think of what you have done for me and my art I smile. A big smile too. :)
Have an awesome day, and please pass my Huge Thanks on to the Team for me too!
Bye for now

My magazines arrived this afternoon. They are packed with great articles and information and you did a great job of me being ‘on focus’. Many thanks once again.
